Circle Finishing Adds Testing Equipment for Passivation of Stainless Steel.

Circle Finishing of Newburyport, MA, has added a 24 hour Water Immersion test to their capabilities. With this testing, Circle can passivate any alloy of stainless steel and perform the testing required in many AMS, ASTM, Federal and customer specifications.
Many passivation specifications require subsequent testing to be sure the surface has been completely passivated and all of the "free iron" removed. Free Iron is iron that has not alloyed with the nickel in the material, and, therefore, can become a corrosion site. The formation of iron oxide or rust on the surface indicates it has not been successfully passivated and can lead to failures in the field. There are several tests that can be performed to evaluate this that range from simple to very complex requiring expensive equipment.
